How this is worked out
UK student loans don’t work like normal debt — they’re a graduate tax. You repay 9% of income above the plan threshold (6% for postgrad). It comes out of your payslip automatically.
Plan thresholds (2026/27):
- Plan 1: £26,065 — pre-2012 starters, NI/Scotland (older).
- Plan 2: £28,470 — England/Wales 2012 to Aug 2023.
- Plan 4: £32,745 — Scotland.
- Plan 5: £25,000 — England, new from Aug 2023.
- Postgrad: £21,000 — masters & doctoral.
Loans get written off eventually — Plan 1 after 25 years, Plan 2 after 30, Plan 5 after 40. Whether to overpay voluntarily depends on whether you’ll clear the loan in full before write-off. For Plan 5 especially, many won’t.
